As a Canadian myself, I believe that when living in any foreign country you should in fact learn the language in which you live.
I believe its important for a couple reasons
1. Respect – from what I hear locals love it when foreigners makes honest efforts to speak their language.
2. Safety – one should always be aware of what is going on around you, part of knowing what’s going on is understanding what is being said. Filipinos make light of ” You can’t be sold”
What are your thoughts?
